Hog Roast

E-mail Print PDF

Southam & District Lions Club will once again be holding their famous 'HOG ROAST' on Monday 18th October 2010 at the back of the Old Mint in Southam. Why are they doing it? It's because they do and they do it every year? But why on October 18th? It's because it's Southam's answer to Alton Towers - the  FAMOUS ANNUAL MOP FAIR.

In the evening, when the baps are generously filled with roasted pork, crackling, stuffing and apple sauce, you can savour the aroma of the roasted meat and join the queue for the finest tasty treat of the night!

You are welcome to come along earlier and meet the Lions some of whom will have been on active duty since 8am getting the Hog ready  and wired to the pole! (That's the hog wired to the pole not the Lions!)

Other attractions apart from the fair organised and run by the Lions include the HOG ROAST RAFFLE supported by our many business friends in the area with magnificent prizes and the TOMBOLA which is always popular particularly with the young people. So mums and dads make sure you have some golden coins in your purses and pockets for the little ones!

The Lions are supporting ''HELP FOR HEROES'' and of course local charities this year.

Chesterton Windmill Open to the Public

E-mail Print PDF

Chesterton Windmill will once again be opened by Warwickshire County Council to the public.

Following the success of last year’s opening, the windmill will be fully operational (weather permitting) for one weekend, planned for 11 and 12 of September in conjunction with National Heritage Open Days.

Chesterton Windmill_2

The opening is the result of a partnership between Warwickshire County Council Museum Service and local residents. Many of the stewards for the event are volunteers from the local community.

Volunteers will also be responsible for direction signs and facilities for visitors on the day. They have also been involved in much of the preparation to make sure that the windmill is fully ready to receive visitors.

The windmill will be open between 10am and 4.30pm on each day (last entry is at 4pm) and there is a suggested donation of £1 per person. Please note that access is via a steep stairway.

The windmill is approximately five miles to the south of Leamington Spa, just off the B4455 Fosse Way, map reference SP 348 595. There will be limited parking at the site depending on the weather. The nearest village is Harbury.

Michelle Phillips, Museum Service & Transformation Manager said: “The opening of Chesterton Windmill has been a very successful event in the past and we are delighted that the event is able to happen again this year.

“Warwickshire County Council Museum Service would like to thank the local residents who have so enthusiastically offered their services as volunteers and ensured that the opening takes place.”

Malcolm Murphy, organiser of the local volunteers, said: “The local residents are very proud of Chesterton Windmill and we are pleased to be able to offer our support to this worthwhile event.”

Bear Faced Cheek 2

E-mail Print PDF

In a recent particularly scurrilous article, aspersions were cast on our allies and friends the Canadians.

The article accused the Canucks of being mamby pamby about the use of Warwickshire's Bear and Ragged Staff because they want to free it from its chains.

It transpires that Warwickshire Council have beaten them to it.

Councils made 'political correctness' an art form and Warwickshire have, for a long time, had a watered down Bear and Ragged Staff.

bear-002 The Warwickshire Council bear: free at last

bear-001The Police version appears to be wearing a skirt and hat. It is so happy to be free of its chains that it's having a dance - a pole dancer, in fact.

bear-003Another example from the Police. This shows what happens when you lose the chains: the bear can't find the staff.

The Council bear had another job before working  for the council:

Consumer Watchdog: It's War

E-mail Print PDF

watchdogIt looks like there may be a price war brewing in Southam.

I called in to the Co-op today as I have a penchant for their brand of dog food [I am a dog, after all]. At the till I was presented with a 10% off next purchase voucher. If this was some sort of ruse, I outwitted them by immediately going back in and buying twenty quids worth of stuff which netted me a saving of two pounds.

It's probably the new Tesco which has prompted this generosity but, if this behaviour spreads to other shops, can only benefit us, the consumer. It can also be viewed as a "price war".

If a price war is to break out, let us pause for a minute and think of the poor old prices. Many prices could be hurt or even killed. I have heard tales of pounds being stretched, stamped down on and even slashed. On the other paw, who cares about prices and quids being hurt?

Kineton Sports

E-mail Print PDF

Warwickshire County Council’s Extended Services team, the cluster co-ordinator for the Kineton cluster and the School Sports Partnership have put on a month of sporting fun for Kineton kids over the summer holidays.

Having gained funding through the county’s Positive About Young People programme to run a greatly subsidised summer sports camp at Kineton High School for 4 weeks this summer.

It has been hailed a huge success. All 60 places have been fully booked for every single session.

Run by qualified sports coaches, and assisted by 6th form students from Kineton High School, the camp is open to young people between the ages of 8 and 13 from the local area.

The young people have taken part in a wide variety of sports - tennis, football, rugby, badminton, basketball, hockey, netball, dance, trampolining, dodge ball, golf, rowing.

Jo Rolls, cluster co-ordinator for Kineton, said: “We have had some really positive feedback from parents, as well as the young people involved, and are hoping to be able to run similar camps over each school holiday.”

Two of the sporting stars backed up Jo’s words with Genevieve Dillon-Godfrey saying: “Great variety of choice of sport, and there is always something for everyone to do. The coaches are really nice and helpful.”

Sedona Short agreed, saying: “It stops you being bored at home and you meet new friends.”

HS2 Walk

ANTI HIGH SPEED RAIL CAMPAIGNER TO WALK ENTIRE PROPOSED ROUTE OF HS2

hs2-logo

Stop HS2 campaigner and founding member Lizzy Williams will begin walking the entire route of the proposed High Speed Rail Link between London and Birmingham on Wednesday 1st September. WALKHS2 is the brainchild of Lizzy after discussing a walk with fellow HS2 objectors across the country and abroad on Facebook shortly after the HS2 plans were announced on 11th March this year. In addition, a WALKHS2 ‘walk the line’ weekend will take place on the weekend of 10th, 11th & 12th September.

For details of walks please visit www.walkhs2.co.uk.

Anyone who opposes HS2, or is undecided and wants to see exactly what is at stake,  is encouraged to take part and Action Groups up and down the country are joining in this positive action event designed to highlight the widespread opposition throughout the country.

To coincide with Lizzys walk southwards, action groups in Warwickshire have also organised a walk of the Kenilworth Greenway to Burton Green taking place on Sunday 5th September. Various groups are looking forward to welcoming Lizzy on her way and she is also looking forward to meeting as many people as possible including various celebrities affected. Lizzy aims to have reached the Battle of Edgcote Reinactment on Saturday September 11th in Chipping Warden, Near Banbury. The Battle of Edgcote site is directly threatened by the HS2 proposal and lies just two miles west of her home in South Northamptonshire. Lizzy then hopes to carry on, meeting fellow campaigners from the Chiltern Society in Amersham and all the way down to London.

Lizzy, 36, who is unable to work following a car crash which left her with brain injuries and nerve damage, intends to raise awareness of the threat posed by HS2 to the British Countryside and Environment and the nations finances and will be walking the route in short stages over the month of September.

The walk will start at the northernmost part of the DfTs published maps, just north of Lichfield in Staffordshire and will conclude late September at Euston Station. Williams will come back at a later date to walk the spur into the centre of Birmingham to coincide with Conservative Party conference.

Lizzy said “This is something I feel I have to do despite my health problems. It will be a huge challenge in my recovery process for me.  If I don’t do all I can to try and save our countryside and heritage, I will never forgive myself.  I hope by walking I will help raise national awareness of this outrageously flawed proposal and the damage it has already done to our communities. I also want to see for myself what could be destroyed along the line. People’s futures have been stolen and I want the Government to return them.  People need to wake up and realise what the Country stands to lose and that the losses to all of us grossly outweigh the unsubstantiated and merely assumed economic gains. Too many people are burying their heads in the sand believing it will never happen when those of us involved in fighting know that the Government is absolutely committed to HS2 despite the fact that the public consultation has not yet been carried out. People also need to realise that the billions needed for the scheme to go ahead will cost every single person and mean huge cutbacks elsewhere. The 1996 EU directive the HS2 proposal attempts to address is outdated by 14 years of technological advances and the directive urgently needs review. We all want better transport infrastructure in this country but it should be sustainable in every aspect and provide value for money, which this proposal completely fails to do.”

Stop HS2 Convenor Joe Rukin said “Lizzy has inspired people and captured their imagination up and down the line, as those of us who have actually examined the plans know more attention has to be paid to HS2 and we hope this will be a real show of unity against this ridiculous extravagance. The simplest analysis shows it’s not just a White Elephant; it’s a whole herd of them being forced into a cluster of financial black holes. Recently I met with Andrew McNaughton, the Chief Engineer behind the project, and he admitted that there is a ‘Political  need to build something that is a statement about modern transport.’ and that seems to be the only logical reason for building it, as there is no business case, no environmental case and no money to pay for it. He said ‘If the French can do it, why can’t we?’ Well the French are planning to cut services on the TGV as they are losing money. They say the London to Birmingham section will take over 11,000 people off planes every day, but there are no flights between London and Birmingham. They say there will be over three times as many passengers as there are now, but they said that about HS1 and their services have just been cut due to lack of demand and it’s being sold off for a quarter of what it cost. In cash terms, even on a 60-year forecast, HS2 will lose twelve billion pounds and that’s if any of the supporting figures can be believed. They say it will be good for regional economies, but HS2 Ltd admit that it might only reinforce the London economy, but haven’t done any work on that yet. To do this now is insane. Schools are being cut, hospitals are being cut, and fire and police stations are being cut. Even playgrounds are being cut, but Phillip Hammond is still going to get his train set.”

Lizzy will start her walk on the A515 Tewnalls Lane, at the railway bridge, just north of Lichfield Golf & Country Club, WS13 8HE at 11am on Wednesday 1st September. The first day will conclude at Lichfield Trent Valley station.

Stop HS2 is the national group campaigning on behalf of anti-HS2 action groups up and down the proposed route.

Planned local events and an itinerary (subject to change) of Lizzys’ progress can be found at www.stophs2.org and at www.walkhs2.co.uk

Statements attributed to HS2 Ltd by Joe Rukin came from a meeting held at the DfT offices on 17th August with action groups from Warwickshire.

Details of the Kenilworth Greenway walk can be found at www.bgvh.org.uk (Burton Green, the destination of the walk) www.hs2cv8.co.uk (Kenilworth, for those coming from the south) and www.hhag.org.uk (Berkswell, for those coming from the north).

The Kenilworth Greenway was part of the Sustrans Connect 2 network, which won lottery funding in the ITV1 ‘The People’s £50 Million’ programme in December 2007. The Burton Green section has not been surfaced due to the threat of HS2.

Joe Rukin is Acting Convenor, Stop HS2, the national body campaigning against HS2. http://www.stophs2.org and Chair, Kenilworth Stop HS2 Action Group http://www.hs2cv8.co.uk
